The mandatory general overhaul of the first of three vehicles used by Marconi Express, the monorail system connecting Guglielmo Marconi Airport to Bologna railway station, has been successfully completed.
The vehicle, which had travelled 650,000 kilometres and carried approximately 2 million passengers since it entered service, underwent a thorough inspection and refurbishment of all its structural, mechanical, electrical and electronic components.
Returning to Bologna yesterday morning, Tuesday 2 December, the vehicle will now undergo a series of technical tests and line trials before being fully returned to service. During this phase, the Marconi Express will operate with two vehicles coupled together in a “shuttle” configuration, running every 15 minutes. This arrangement doubles the transport capacity for each journey, reducing boarding and alighting times while still ensuring regular service. The normal frequency of approximately 7 minutes will be restored as soon as the necessary checks have been completed.
During the Christmas holidays, and in general during periods of increased traffic, a supplementary shuttle bus service will also be activated to respond flexibly to passengers’ mobility needs.
With the return to service of the first vehicle, a general overhaul of the second will begin. The entire cycle of overhauls of the three vehicles will be completed in 2026, thus ensuring the full efficiency of the system and maintaining service quality standards.
